What You Want to Know about Ceramic Ball Bearings 2021
Ceramic ball bearings are a typical example of the wide application of engineering ceramics in the industrial field. And there are many countries that highly value ceramic ball bearing. They are a perfect combination of new technology, new materials, and new structures.  Outer rings, inner rings, and rolling elements generally constitute bearings. The most common materials of bearings are generally metal. Let's learn about ceramic ball bearings today!

The Structure of  Ceramic Ball Bearing

Ceramic balls have self-lubricating properties. So you can decide whether to use grease according to the operating requirements. And you can decide whether to use seals and retainers according to operating requirements.

Rings and rolling elements are two indispensable elements of a bearing. When these two elements are not the same material, there will be a hybrid construction bearing.

When the rolling element is made of ceramic materials, it is defined as a hybrid construction ceramic ball bearing. Commonly used ceramic ball materials are zirconia (ZRO2) and silicon nitride (SI3N4); commonly used ring materials are bearing steel (GCR15), stainless iron (440, 440C), and stainless steel (304, 316, 316L).

Advantages of Ceramic Ball Bearings

  • Zero corrosion. Can withstand a corrosive working environment.

  • It can tolerate random changes in temperature. High and low-temperature switching has no effect on ceramic bearings.

  • Not easily deformed. Ceramic has a higher modulus of elasticity than steel, so it rarely deforms due to force.

  • Long service life. The ceramic rolling ball's density is lower than that of steel, and the weight is lighter. So the friction generated by the centrifugal force of the outer ring can be reduced, and the service life will be longer.

  • Insulation. Because ceramic balls are insulators, using ceramic balls between the inner and outer rings of the bearing can achieve the effect of insulation. In this way, the bearing can be used in a conducive environment.

Disadvantages of Ceramic Ball Bearings

  • The processing is difficult and the cost is high.

  • The hardness is high and it is not resistant to impact.

  • It cannot expand and contract with the equipment. The fact that ceramic materials are not affected by temperature is both an advantage and a disadvantage.
